Project Sponsors Council co-chairs invite public testimony

Oregon co-chair Henry Hewitt and Washington co-chair Steve Horenstein heard public testimony on the alternatives for access to Hayden Island. In Spring 2010, the Project Sponsors Council asked a group of Hayden Island stakeholders, the City of Portland, Metro and CRC staff to evaluate additional access concepts for Hayden Island. The stakeholder group, including representatives from Hi-NooN, Hayden Island Livability Project, Portland Working Group, and island business, is evaluating whether Hayden Island is better served by on-island or off- island access to I-5. Options considered include:

  • An interchange that directs traffic from I-5 entrance and exit ramps to a single road, the newly created Tomahawk Island Drive in the center of the island.
  • An interchange that spreads the traffic for I-5 entrance and exit ramps between two local roads (Jantzen Drive and Hayden Island Drive)
  • A combined Hayden Island–Marine Drive interchange, where an arterial bridge(s) serves the island from Marine Drive.

Comments received at the meeting informed additional Hayden Island interchange concepts shared with PSC members at their June 25 meeting. A similar public meeting was held on June 29 to share these additional options.
